HURRICANE JOSE is on track to give us the best surf all summer. A massive earthquake in Southern Mexico, and a Robin Rowell sighting, and Crazy Ass Kim Young Un raises the stakes again.

JOSE will be the third Hurricane to affect the US in as many weeks.

HARVEY wrecked havoc in Texas. IRMA slayed the Caribbean before destroying The Keys. And now JOSE is heading for the northeast. And while most forecasts has him skirting the coastline, they are not ruling out JOSE making landfall from New York to Boston.

The last thing we need is for yet another hurricane making landfall.

The preferred track is the coastal route. As in just enough to send us surf and not close enough to cause anymore damage and heartache.

All eyes are on the south facing beaches again. It sure looks like JOSE is gonna send some surf our way. This is one of those storms where surfers can legitimately get excited. Having learned their lessons about predicting surf from Hurricanes that are just off the coast of Africa.

This is not the case here. We are going to get surf up and down the East Coast and into Nova Scotia and Iceland. So pull those step ups and guns off the racks and wax em kids. It's show time! Time to put all that training to some use. What's that? You haven't been training for big surf? You all better get your shit together and make it sooner than later.

This has been a summer of reconnecting with a lot of NH transplants to others parts of our country. Ryan Olsen, TC Christo, and Dougie "Fresh" Wright were all in town on Labor Day. They have all left with the exception of Ryan Olsen. He and his wife have moved back for the time being. It was great to see them all and even better to be able to catch some of their surfing on video and stills.

They were stoked to be home again, and even more stoked to score surf.

Timing your visits back home to coincide with potential surf is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it's a bona fide crap shoot. But the boys scored. And I was happy to provide them with some lasting memories in the way of digital files.
I did a web edit on labor Day that had all three of them playing in their old playground. And I shot a significant amount of stills as well.

Suffice it to say, they all went back with smiles on their faces and stories to tell their West Coast and Hawaiian friends.

And just when the last one left (TC) another old friend came home for a quick visit. And I do mean quick visit. Robin Rowell was in town and he was in Hampton for all of an hour. He and his dad were on a tight schedule. They were heading to Maine to meet up with some other family members. Robin no longer surfs due to health conditions. But he's still a walking and talking encyclopedia of surfing. Especially California.

Back in the day Robin was one of the most powerful surfers to ever surf our waves. He was like a linebacker out there with the finesse of a wide receiver. He was intense. Just a pleasure to watch him take off behind the peak and just rip the snot out of the wave in front of him. A goofy foot with smarts.

I first met him in the early 70's at 10th Street. There was a small knee to waist high swell running when I saw him on the beach. He was sitting in some kind of lotus yoga position reading a book on "psychology."

He had that distinctive bowl hair cut like George Greenough.

I walked up to him and asked him why he was reading "that book" when there was surf to be had. He must of said something negative, because I ended up kicking that book out of his hands and shamed him into going surfing with me.

We were close friends from that day forward.

Robin could switch-foot and just kill it on any wave he took off on.

There is not enough time or space to write here in this blog about the days we all spent together surfing together. But it's safe to say, we got more than our quota of waves back then. And we did our share of skateboarding as well.

This was a spot I discovered and named GHOST TOWN. That's Robin skating by our late friend Joe Somogyi. We all skated barefoot back then. Somewhere on my Vimeo page is a video from this session. I would park my van along the vacant building and open the doors and blast Robin Trower.

Those were fun times for sure. And like all good things, we though they'd never end. But life caught up to us all. Robin would still come back every summer, but the visits became every other year to finally years would go by before we saw him. I have seen Robin whenever I'd go to California. It was great seeing him. We all hung around and reminisced about the past.

I managed to get a selfie or two. That's Robin leaning on Kevin.
I hope he takes better care of himself. He told us he caught his last wave 9 years ago. That's a long time. It would be fun to surf with him one more time.
Maybe he'll read this Blog, and get his ass back in shape, and one of these upcoming summers he'll show up in great shape, and then proceed to show us all up out in the water.

Because Robin could surf. We love you brother.

This week's Ed's corner pic is from August 14th, 2013. It's one of those rare finds. It's a woman and I don't believe I know who she is. If any of you recognize her could you let me know who she is, and then let her know that she's on the BLOG under Ed's corner. Photo by Ed O'Connell

Now for Some International News
I was truly saddened by the news of the massive earthquake in southern Mexico. The surf camp that all the boys had just visited last month was destroyed along with many other buildings. Many people lost their lives. The owner of the camp Danny Setum has much info on his facebook page. They need help.

This is the town church before the earthquake.

And this is the church after the quake.

I am perplexed as to why the world is not paying more attention to that bona fide bonehead Kim Young Un in North Korea. He has once again launched a missile right over Japan. Are you all seeing and hearing this? With all the current Hurricane news and the every other day terrorist attacks, we have either all become complacent with this nut-job and his hurrying to get nuclear weapons in his arsenal, or we have become numb and dumb.

In either case we (the world) needs to do something.

Here he is on Friday morning watching the latest missile launch as it heads towards Japan. This is so creepy looking. Him sitting there alone at his desk watching his missile. My God.

All the current stiff sanctions are not working. He does not care. Plus he has China backing him. And honestly, this is not going to end the way the civilized world wants it to. He is hell bent on going to war. It's gotta be that haircut. It looks uncomfortable to me, so I'm guessing it's really uncomfortable for him.

Let's face it, the man needs a makeover.

KSM Photoshop of the Week

So last week I did not photoshop the world's craziest terrorist. Not on that date. He needed to be seen in his bare open ugly self. Not this week though kids. I'm right back at it. And who besides Kim Young Un and his wacky Army buddies would like to see the destruction of America? You got it! Ole KSM would fit right in with that Loony Troupe. Here he is jumping and clapping with glee at the latest North Korean Missile test. They look like they're really having fun huh?

So my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

*Note to self -must pick up a case of those Mushroom hats those creepy soldiers wear at Home Depot this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Max Fatello September 14th, 2017!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jacko Keefe September 21st, 2017!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Victor Capozzi September 22nd, 2017!
REST IN PEACE Harry Dean Stanton. Age 91. One of the greatest Character actors of all time.

I am holding off the release of this movie until Thanksgiving. We need a few more big swells to make this film legit. So far so good. We just need a few more head high and bigger swells. If you are a woman or you know any women or girls that can surf. *Especially if they are shortboarders. Please have them get in touch with me. I keep meeting more and more women who have been surfing around these parts, and have just been flying under the radar. So help me pass the word.

IRMA 9-9-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Me and the newest Inductee into the "East Coast Hall Of Fame" Kevin F. Grondin went south to meet up with the first swell from Hurricane IRMA.
The water was warm and green, and the boys were all over it. The surfers that I know who appear in this film are: Kevin Grondin, Kody Grondin, Robbie Goodwin, Sam, Liam, Jared Veltsos, Max Fatello, and Jesse Gould. The music is by my old band SEMPER FI and it was recorded back in 1986 on a 4-track machine in our rehearsal place. The songs are GIMME SHELTER and DON'T GIVE UP (an original song I wrote).

The musicians in this version of Semper Fi are :Ralph Fatello guitar and lead vocals, Rich Appel bass and backing vocals, Eric Brown drums and backing vocals, and Greg Lyons keyboards.

LABOR DAY September 4 2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The "boys were back in town". Dougie "Fresh" Wright, TC Christo, and Ryan Olsen all NH transplants were back on the Live Free Or Die coast. They scored insane surf on Thursday August 31st, and now this. Labor Day September 4th, 2017 had a fun little waist to chest high swell, and the vibe was all good. The song is by Thin Lizzy "The Boys Are Back In Town"
This is the second edit in as many days and it's on to the BIG Swell. But hold on kids...it looks like there's more surf coming! Oh hell yeah!

The Day After 9-1-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

A couple of weeks ago Cory and I were hanging out in the pool with Tony at the Surf Shack. He played Abbey Road as we took in the afternoon sun. The song SUN KING came on and I remember thinking, this would make a cool soundtrack to an all empty wave short web edit. And that's exactly what I did. The arrangement is by Giacomo Bondi and it works well with this edit. Like I said, it's just empty waves. I shot this all at the Wall on September 1st, 2017.

HIT THE BEACH X 8-25-17 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The 10th Annual HIT THE BEACH August 25th, 2017. Hampton American Legion Post 35 along with Cinnamon Rainbows, Pioneers, Summer Sessions, Zapstix, ESA-NNE, Fresh Valley Fruit, and all you Volunteers help take the Wounded Warriors from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other Military stations around the world surfing. This is our 10th Year! It's been incredible. About five years ago, we opened it up to the Veteran's spouses and children. Because let's face it, the families have suffered just as much as the vets themselves. We have turned this day into a family Beach-Surf Day. Surfing is All about having Fun. And as you will see, everyone in this web edit is having fun. The song is by SEMPER FI my band from 1984-1987. I wrote this song RED, WHITE, and BLUE in 1986. Surprisingly, it goes well with this video. Again, THANK YOU SPONSORS and a VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to all you Volunteers! I love you all.

GERTRUDE August 17-2017 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Hurricane GERT was a bust in NH. The long arm of Cape Cod blocked any chance of a swell reaching our shoreline. The call was to head down south, or to go further north. Instead, I hung around hoping and waiting for something. Eventually, a little something did show up late on the day after, and the local longboard crew were on hand to take advantage of the small, but glassy waves. Mikey Moran, Kyle Linseman, Pev, Duffy, Kevin Rafferty, and a couple of shortboarders. Kai Nichols (Happy Birthday) and Crowley. *Oh and the debut of Jonah Kirby made the final cut. Xavier Rudd provides the soundtrack.

HIT THE BEACH from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

A combination of the HIT THE BEACH surfing event from the last few years. Featuring wounded veterans from the Wounded Warrior project, The NEDS, and others. The annual event held at Hampton, NH North Beach is sponsored by American Legion Post 35, Cinnamon Rainbows, Pioneers, Zapstix, and Summer Sessions. Along with help from the ESA-NNE, Joe Gangi's Fruit company, The Town of Hampton, The HPD, the HFD, and the many many wonderful Volunteers who show up every year. This coming Friday August 25th, 2017 will be out tenth anniversary. TEN YEARS! "If We Say It's Safe To Surf! It's Safe To Surf!!!

GRANITE GIRLS and The RIVER WOMEN
from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo. This is the trailer for the new Surf Free Or Die and Ralph's Pic movie about the women surfers of the Northeast.
We're looking at a late summer release. It's been fun working with these talented women. The movie itself will be around 30 minutes long.
Hope you like it.
